Quality sleep is essential for overall health and well-being. It not only rejuvenates the body but also plays a crucial role in various physiological processes. In this info sheet, we'll explore the importance of sleep and the different stages of the sleep cycle.

Why Sleep Matters:

  • Health Longevity: Consistent quality sleep is vital for longevity. Studies have shown that inadequate sleep over time can negatively impact overall health and even shorten lifespan.

  • Metabolism and Cravings: Lack of sleep can disrupt hormonal balance, leading to increased levels of the hunger hormone ghrelin and decreased levels of the fullness hormone leptin. This imbalance can result in slower metabolism and heightened cravings, contributing to weight gain.

Understanding the Sleep Cycle: During sleep, the body undergoes various stages in a cycle, including three non-REM stages and one REM stage.

  • Stage One - Wake: The transition from wakefulness to sleep, characterized by drifting off and brief awakenings during the night.

  • Stage Two - Light Sleep: Approximately half of the night is spent in light sleep, marked by a decrease in blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing rate.
