"Can't" Doesn't Exist

Media Commentary Series #7

Where I Borrowed Image From

Hi there & happy Summer Solstice 2022 (it’s also the first day of Cancer)! It’s the longest day of the year, so make the best of it! I happened upon the article that can be found in the link below this morning, and I was so amazed by what I read that I had to share. The article is about a young boy named Cole Summers (appropriate with today being the first day of summer), and he embodies what I want Bay Flavor to be all about. According to the article, Cole started his first business at age seven. At nine, he started paying his own taxes. By ten, he had bought and was running a 350-acre farmstead where he raised goats and turkeys. For his eleventh birthday he bought himself a tractor. His list of accomplishments don’t end there, so be sure to read the article.

What really resonated with me is Cole’s view on education. He believes in a real world, environmental approach to education. The author of Common Sense asked Cole to write a piece for the blog, and Cole obliged. As you’ll see, his approach to education REALLY works. The kid can write his a$$ off!!! I’m not sure if I’ve impressed or a little jealous. Most likely I’m experiencing a mix of the two. Either way, the kid has my respect & admiration. He is a business owner, which I believe is the “new American Dream.” I have been thinking about writing a piece about how the American Dream has shifted from homeownership to business ownership. Reading this article about Cole has inspired me to get started. So be on the lookout for that! I encourage you to read the article, but if you don’t, here is that amazing paragraph bursting with Bay Flavor:

When I read articles about other teens struggling with anxiety because of all the stresses they believe only politicians can solve, like climate change, it makes me sad for them. I have friends in public school and every one of them is more capable than I am at something. I’ve heard adults tell them that they can’t do something because they’re “just a kid.” I’ve watched them want to try something and be told no “because I said so.” And there’s always the “kids these days” insult. It isn’t that my generation isn’t capable. We just need the freedom, encouragement, and empowerment to show what we can do.

Cole, I believe the same is true of my generation and people in general. I feel like people are constantly bombarded with negative words, phrases, and actions that compel them to stay in their respective comfort zones. In some cases, that negativity is coming from their own minds. At Bay Flavor, that negativity is seen as a challenge to burst out of the comfort zone. Oh… I CAN’T?!?! Ok, watch me! This same dynamic played out over the past few days in the Stanley Cup Finals. Yes, I HAD to bring this up! The Tampa Bay Lightning were beaten 7-0 Saturday night in Colorado. Most analysts and “experts” counted them out after that beatdown. Guess what? They made the necessary adjustments, put the loss behind them, and beat the Avalanche 6-2 in Tampa last night!!! The Lightning are going to win their third straight Stanley Cup because the team & the fan base “THREElieve!!!” Have a beautiful, healthy, and productive Summer Solstice. Sending you peace & love. As always, keep it Bay Flavor buddies!

P.S. - GO BOLTS!!!
